Supercapacitors (ultracapacitors, supercapacitors) are a new type of rechargeable batteries which are characterized by a very short time of recharge, but nevertheless withstand tens of thousands of charge / discharge cycles.
One of the first gadgets that use the similar technology, is a flashlight with a long name 5.11 Light For Life Tactical Series UC3.400. This device is charging for just 90 seconds and is able to work after that for 90 minutes without interruption, providing illumination of 90 lumens.
You can recharge this gadget for 50 thousand times, it does not have any problems relating to degradation of the battery or the “memory effect”.
The preliminary cost of such a flashlight is 170 dollars.
I’d like to believe that soon ultracapacitors will be widely used as batteries for mobile phones and other electronic gadgets, as 90 seconds of charging is really great.
