Internet firmly entered our lives, gradually replacing traditional media such as radio, television and newspapers. Not surprisingly, it has caused the demand for special gadgets – mobile internet device (MID), a device which main function is fast, mobile and convenient access to the Internet. SmartDevices, the Chinese high-tech electronics manufacturer, is preparing to release another representative of a class called MID SmartQ 7.
The device is very unusual and causes contradictory feelings, and is starting to be compared with smart phones. SmartQ is equipped with 7-inch touch screen, and surfing the internet will be more convenient than with the iPhone. But the screen resolution is 800×480 – the same as Toshiba TG01’s. Too weak for HD-video.
The processor is of ARM architecture, 667MHz, manufactured by Samsung. Big screen involves more possibilities than ordinary phones have. Meanwhile, the frequency of the processor 7 SmartQ is the same as the iPhone (624MHz), not to mention the 1000MHz Toshiba TG01.
The potential buyers will not like the fact that there is no 3G – a connection to the Internet depends only from WiFi. 128MB of RAM might be enough, but the memory for storing files is too low, just 1GB.
However, the PRICE compensates all the minuses of the gadget: now the SmartQ is available only in China and it is possible to buy it for less than $ 200. Compared to the UMPC (Ultra PC), two hundred bucks – is nothing, a penny.
SmartQ 7 has features that no other smart phone has – a full USB-port with the host-mode. It can connect any peripherals – mouse, keyboard, printer or flash. This gadget has TV regime, which allows you to use it as a video console to play videos on the big screen. Built-in stereo speakers are a nice addition for fans to watch movies during lunch.
SmartQ 7 is a full operating system (Ubuntu / Linux), which gives the user almost unlimited possibilities when choosing software.
Dimensions of the gadget: 200 x 120 x 24mm, weight – about 500gr, and battery capacity 4200MAh (according to the manufacturer) is sufficient for 48 hours of continuous music playback.
As we already mentioned, a test batch of gadgets have been released in China for $ 190, full SmartQ 7 will go on sale approximately at the beginning of summer 2009.
