c300_04-1

Recently Lenovo company has announced its plans for the near future. But it is not about the statistics and expectations of profit, but a new gadget, which is expected soon on the market.

PCs «All in one» C300 technical characteristics are closer to notebooks’, but the appearance is quite like a tabletop system. Anyway, I have not ever heard about 20-inch screen notebooks. Inside the new item there is Intel Atom processor and 230 chipset Intel 945GC (plus the amount of RAM is 1 to 2 gigabytes), the integrated video from Intel displays the image on the 20-inch screen with a 16:9 ratio, and hard disk with a size of 160 to 640 gigabytes keeps historical data.

Naturally, the novelty can be connected to the network. It is a pity that by default there is a set of 100-megabit Ethernet, but the WiFi 802.11 abg comes as an option.

The computer will also have 1.3-megapixel camera, the 1394/firewire port, 6 USB ports, card reader 6-in-1, two small columns of 3 watts and the power supply at 120 watts. The mouse and keyboard connect via USB and PS / 2, respectively.

Originally it is planned to provide options for a system with XP Home, Vista Home Basic or Vista Home Premium onboard. But it is obvious that such parameters would be preferable for the first option. And with the Windows 7 we will think about OS upgrade.

The new device will be released in July. Approximate cost is $ 450.

Startup display developer Pixel Qi has posted the first images of its upcoming 3Qi display, which combines a black-and-white mode, full-color mode, and an e-paper mode intended for e-book readers. The image shows two 3Qi screens side-by-side, one using its e-paper mode with no backlighting, and the other showing a full color image with its backlight on. Pixel Qi founder Mary Lou Jepson has also posted an image of the display outside in full sunlight, although the test unit’s metal bezel and quality of the iPhone photo make it difficult to evaluate the display’s quality, it’s certainly readable.

On the photo you can see two identical displays with a diagonal of 10.1 inch (25.7 cm), one of which is included in a color mode with backlight, while the other is using the e-paper without lights. Then there is the photo of a display under direct sun rays.

It is rather difficult to overestimate the usefulness and usability of these displays. In addition, the information displayed on them would be perfectly visible in any light, they can significantly save battery power (in the e-paper it is only required when changing the picture). The 3Qi display isn’t targeting future OLPC devices, although Pixel Qi says it is continuing to work with the OLPC project on future designs. Mary Lou Jepson has also extolled both touch and multitouch technologies as key to the future of display, although for now Pixel Qi is focusing on pulling low-cost, sunlight-readable displays into products aimed at developing markets. Mary Lou promises that by fall, we will be able to see these displays in the new netbooks and readers.

kopin-vga-lcd-strip

One of the recurring themes in conversations about the gadgets is the miniaturization. It would seem, that further reduction of gadgets could make them simply inconvenient. But, as practice shows, this time, is still far away. And yet another proof of this is display from Kopin Corporation.

The photo above shows the working LCD display with a resolution 600h480 points and a diagonal of about 7 millimeters. Achieving this compactness was managed by reducing the color points to a 2.9 х8, 7 micrometer (micrometer is millesimal share of a millimeter). But this is only a step towards the intended goal of the company – to reach a settlement of 2048h2048 on the screen size of no more than a standard postage stamp.

Today, by using this technology, the company is capable to production displays with the following permissions:

  • SVGA (800 x 600), diagonal of 0.34 inches (8.6 mm)
  • XGA (1024 x 768), diagonal of 0.44 inches (1.1 cm)
  • SXGA (1280 x 1024), diagonal of 0.56 inches (1.4 cm)

They are mainly used in hi-end cameras, camcorders etc. Particularly, the company stresses its position as a leader among developers of electronic viewfinder for DSLR cameras.

It is possible that this same technology will be used in gadgets such as «clock-phones», where the size of the display is rather severely limited.
