Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, and NTT DoCoMo announced their intention to merge S60, UIQ, Symbina OS, and MOAP in order to create a single open mobile platform. In addition to the above brands, AT & T, Samsung Electronics, Vodafone, LG Electronics, Texas Instruments, and STMicroelectronics will also join this project.
These large, powerful mobile giants plan to adopt the position of the Symbian Foundation, an open platform, which has grown on the basis of Symbian Limited.
To create the Foundation, Nokia acquired the remaining assets of Symbian Limited. Motorola and Sony Ericsson announced the transfer of the technology UQI, and DoCoMo – MOAP. The new platform will be available in the near future.
Nigel Clifford, Symbian CEO said: “Ten years ago, Symbian was established by visionary people who wanted to provide the entire mobile industry on advanced open operating system. We want to become the most used OS on the planet, and today the Symbian mobile phone market has no equal. ”
President of Sony Ericsson, Dick Komyama, added: “Gross operating platform, which wants to provide the Foundation, will allow producers to turn their attention to the technical characteristics of the phones. Sony Ericsson believes that the Symbian Foundation platform will ease manufacturers lives, giving them the opportunity to provide more innovation and quality applications.”
